PlayStation 2 was my first ever console like many other kids in India. I and my younger brother bought it because so that we could play Tekken. Unfortunately, playing Tekken on PlayStation 2 was not even remotely as fun as playing it in a game parlor. Once we realized that, we started trying out a lot of other games. In those experiments, my brother found his first love FIFA and I found my next favorite game after Half-Life. It was called Uncharted. The story, the animation, the action, everything was fantastic. Though,
what really blew me away was Nathan Drake. The protagonist of the game was a rebel of sorts but was still oozing with charm. He was daring, courageous and a complete gentleman. He was the relatable Hero. No superpowers, no gadgets, just guts.
I went on to play the game multiple times at various difficulty levels. Sony continued to feed my appetite, with one kick-ass sequel after another, from Uncharted 2 to Uncharted 4. The legacy of Uncharted has been so strong that Sony managed to create a super-hit off-shoot called Uncharted: The Lost Legacy even without Nathan Drake. This featured 3 of most engaging and entertaining characters in the Uncharted universe after Nathan Drake.
Since I played Uncharted for the first time, I dreamed of seeing a live-action representation. Other fans have also united towards this and in 2010, Columbia Pictures confirmed working on a film, only to be stalled soon after as key people kept stepping in & out. Now Naughty Dog (creators of Uncharted) say they have been in talks with Tom Holland to play Nathan Drake with a prequel storyline to the original games. I am honestly not very hopeful of this development as it sounds too good to be true.
Until Naughty Dog figures things out, we have just been given the aptest live-action adaptation in the form of a short film. Nathan Fillion plays Nathan Drake and looks like the casting of our dreams. The adaptation looks and feels just like the game and is so much fun to watch. Nathan Drake tied-up to a chair; jumping out of the window, running to climb into a Jeep driven by Sully, just perfect. The film also features Stephen Lang as Sully and Mircea Monroe as Elena.
I am really hoping for a fairytale ending, where this breaks-the-internet and people are compelled to produce a full-length feature film. That would be the ideal addition to the legacy of Uncharted and my Hero, Nathan Drake.
